Central Association
of Nigerians in the UK
(CANUK)
Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (Canuk) is an umbrella body representing all Nigerians in the United Kingdom. Canuk’s mission is to protect, unify and empower Nigerians in the United Kingdom towards contributing to the growth and development of our host country, (the United Kingdom) and our motherland (Nigeria).
Canuk was formed by the Nigeria High Commission in the United Kingdom in recognition of a clear need to unite the plethora of Nigerian societies, bodies, unions and associations under one umbrella organisation. This ensures that the welfare, views, and community interests of Nigerians in the United Kingdom are represented in a harmonious and organised manner; and creating a common forum through which the united voice of Nigerian community in the United Kingdom could be heard.
His Excellency Dr Christopher Kolade CON, the former Nigerian high commissioner to the UK was the founding patron of Canuk. He was succeeded by Dr Dalhatu Sarki Tafida, OFR who sustained the vision of a united Nigerian community under a strong Canuk. Under his leadership Canuk's's membership grew across the UK regions.
Since his departure, the Nigeria high commission has continued to play a vital role in the stability and growth of Canuk. We welcome the new high commissioner His Excellency Ambassador Sarafa Ishola.
Canuk was set up to represent about 200 different associations. Its membership is growing at a very fast pace and we envisage it will soon embrace the estimated over 2 million plus Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom.
On the May 22 2021, a new executive committee was sworn-in. One of the main plans of the new executives is to unite and work for the continued growth of the Nigerian community. We will continue to embark on new programmes to make Canuk more relevant to the community.
We invite your comments and welcome new ideas on how to improve the lot of our community in the UK and Nigeria. For any information or assistance please contact us.
